Introduction:
Documents the Catholic side of the transition "from anathema to dialogue." In 1937, during Stalin's Great Terror, when religion was denounced as "the opium of the people," Pope Pius XI saw no possible room for cooperation with Communism. Catholics in China in 1949 were fearful of the new government. The consecration of bishops without any papal mandate in 1958 was a further obstacle. The worst was over after the Cultural Revolution, and Rome began to see beyond the false dichotomy of either Catholic or Chinese. Published in 1986, out of print in English.
